Retro-a-Gogo: Hot Topic Channels ‘The Craft’ (1996)
It is better that you should rush upon this blade than enter Hot Topic without splurging on merch from the single greatest teen Witchery film in history, 1996’s ‘The Craft’.
Hot Topic has officially licensed, gorgeous goth-y merchandise in the form of jewelry and clothing, including some adorable plus-sized pieces — so much black! And pentacles for the Wiccan in your life who’s birthday is coming up.
This is one of my favorite films for a lot of reasons. Even though it was what the cast called an ‘effects film’, they use those effects sparingly and focus more on deep interpersonal relationships between the characters and witty-yet-hyper-realistic 90s teen dialogue.
The cast is a BAMF slice of 90s Hollywood awesomeness: Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, Neve Campbell, Robin Tunney, Skeet Ulrich, Christine Taylor and Breckin Meyer. The plot has more realism than most horror films and the soundtrack boasts Sponge, Our Lady Peace, Matthew Sweet, All Too Much, Elastica, Spacehog, Letters to Cleo, Love Spit Love and Heather Nova (that’s not even an entire list). The damn film is so dang 1990s, it’s like the flip side of Clueless or something.
If you haven’t seen it, what are you waiting for? Oh, and I bought me an amazing The Craft rosary at Hot Topic.
<3 I’m too fat for what I really want, though! Nancy Downs-esque black vinyl trench coat. Ugh, why not me?
